Ah, the Aussie Christmas. Where the sun shines, the days stretch on and you eat, drink and be merry with those nearest and dearest. It’s a magical time of year and the perfect opportunity to hook on the van and take it somewhere special. We have great memories caravanning at Christmas with the kids and thought we’d share some fun ideas and tips to help you celebrate in your van too.
Get festive and decorate DIY style
First things first – it’s time to put on your Santa hats and pump those Christmas carols. With limited space in your van, it’s wise to keep your decorations simple but fun. If you are traveling full-time, carrying a tree may not be an option, so why not make one yourself! Once you get to camp, put the kids to work to forage for some goodies to make and decorate your tree. We collected some driftwood and shells to make ours and added in some cute fairy lights too. We made it the perfect size to hang outside on our awning in the day as well as on the wall inside at night so Santa could find us and leave a few goodies for the kids.
Explore local events and connect with fellow campers
The good thing about Christmas in Australia is that no matter where you are, there’ll be something festive happening in town. Most towns will have Christmas carols, kids crafts, or even a Christmas market. A trip into town to see the Christmas lights is fun, and if you want to keep catering simple, you could even grab your Chrissy lunch or dinner at the local RSL or Bowling club.
If you are camping further afield, away from the towns and bright lights, how about catching up with fellow campers who may be celebrating alone too? You could all BYO drinks, food, and a chair to eat, drink and be merry, connecting with like-minded people.
Easy Christmas themed food
Speaking of eating, as always when you’re away in the van, it’s best to keep catering as simple as possible. An easy but effective way is to create a Christmas tree platter with all your goodies in the shape of a tree, perfect to bring along to happy hour. You can make this with cheese and bikkies or fruit and desserts. Just remember to pack a large serving board and grab a variety of colourful ingredients from the shop. Watch the video on how to make this here.
Another fun activity that the kids will love are these ‘No-bake, No-fridge’ Reindeer & Snowman cookies. You simply buy all the ingredients and let the kids have fun making them. The best part is that nothing needs refrigeration making it perfect for camping. Watch how we make them here.
Give ‘van-tastic’ gifts
There’s nothing better than waking up on Chrissy morning to a new adventure toy that you can unwrap and play with straight away. If possible, you want to stay away from giving gifts that are not ‘van-friendly’ or need to be looked after. For example, leave that fancy tea cup or vase for Mum at home and get her a comfy camp chair she can use to relax in by the water, or how about a funky travel cup?! For the kids some van friendly ideas include, water toys, bug catchers, binoculars, out door games or even a kite.

Festive activities
There’s so many fun activities you can do with your family while enjoying Christmas in your Caravan.
A few fun ideas to bring everyone together include, holding a ‘Sand Snowman’ making competition. Or how about a good old family game of cricket. Top that all off with an outdoor movie night which is always a winner and I think you can call it a job well done.
What’s your favourite Christmas Caravan traditions? We’d love for you to share in the comments below. Well legends, wherever you spend your Chrissy, we wish you all a magical time and Van-tastic New Year!
