We love our Tray & Canopy set-up. It’s a major part of our daily lives and the ideal set-up for any adventure loving family, tradie or road tripping peeps! If you are considering one for yourself, let us share 10 features that we love about our Tray & Canopy –

1. Lift it off and Plonk it on Baby
This whole MITS canopy system is designed so it can be lifted off, you simply attach the legs, jack up the canopy and drive away. You can then attach the tray sides and ‘BAM’ , you have an Instant Ute!!!
The whole canopy to ute transformation can be done in about 20 minutes. This awesome systems allows you to switch from ‘adventure mode’ to ‘tradie mode’ in a flash.
2. Long-term Investment – have it for life
Because of the great design and lift-off capabilities, it means that you can install this canopy set-up onto your current car, then simply move it across to next car…and the next…and the next!! Making this a life long investment – AMAZING hey?!
3. Full 12 Volt Battery System
Our canopy houses our RedVision 12 Volt power system by Redarc. This system allows us to run luxuries like our upright fridge and freezer, keep the water hot in our shower and power all kinds of awesome things like our on board compressor, induction cook top, and even a coffee machine, toaster and Thermomix.
4. Storage drawers and Slide out prep table
These super deep storage drawers house all the bits and bobs that make our adventures fun! We store our cutlery, cooking equipment and all kinds of things in these bad boys.
The slide out table is also a fantastic feature. It’s where we do all our food prep and cooking – it’s amazing how much we use it and we highly recommend you including one in your set-up.
5. Water Tank & Hot water shower
Our 30 litre water tank runs along the back of the tray head board and it’s such a great use of space. Having this water tank allows us to travel off grid for longer, wash up when on the go, wash our hands, fill drink bottles and even enjoy a shower – it’s the bee’s knees!
Our water tank also feeds our 12 Volt hot water system which we luuurrrve. Being able to have a warm shower when away camping or getting out of the ocean after a spearfish or surf is epic, not to mention getting all the sand off the kids at the beach. It also comes in VERY handy when it’s time to wash up after dinner.
6. Lighting Ahoy – Strip, Flood + Party lights
There’s nothing worse than getting to camp after dark and having no lights to set up. We have a range of epic lighting installed in our canopy that we always use.
The canopy wings feature strip LED lights, the back has Narva flood lights and just for some fun we also installed some crazy LED party lights all along the canopy wings. These bad boys have loads of settings that the kids just love, they can also flash in time with music.
7. Under tray boxes
We have an under tray box on each side of the canopy. These are completely water proof and house our mounted air compressor on one side and things like tie downs, occy straps and dirty recovery gear etc.
Having an onboard compressor is awesome and we use it to pump up our tyres at the beach and even to blow up the kids balls and floaty toys.
8. Rear trundle tray
We have a long lock-able trundle drawer under the tray of our canopy which is another great storage element for us. This drawer is another great use of space and is super long allowing us to store things like fishing rods, spear guns and even hunting equipment.
The removable table/lid is also a great feature that allows us to use this space for cooking, placing a BBQ, and a few more dirty/messy things like filleting fish etc.
9. Roof rack + Solar panel and Awning
We have a full sized roof rack on the top of the canopy which houses our solar panel on one side and the other we use to tie on all the fun adventure toys like surf boards, kayaks and stand up paddle boards. This rack also provides us a spot to mount our full 270 degree Bushwakka awning.
10. Rear canopy door
The best thing about having a Mits tray and canopy is that you can pretty much ‘choose your own adventure’. You can pick and choose what layout and configuration will suit you best.
For us, we chose to have a rear canopy door. This provides us with so much more access to all our gear that we travel with… and as a family of 4, it seems to be a lot!
By setting up your own rig with everything you will use and love, no doubt allows you to live the good life, utilise each feature daily and get the most out of your investment long term.
Our Tray & Canopy was built in Australia by an Australian owned company, Mits Alloy – keen for more information or a quote? Click here.

Like what you do, really cool. With the canopy, looks great, would it work with a rooftop tent ie only access canopy from rear and one side? Have the awning around one side and rear and the rooftop tent access on the otherside.
One of the hard shell types.
Cheers
